Christmas gift ideas for a senior dog

Looking for some Christmas gift ideas for dogs? Read on for inspiration on what to buy for an older dog this festive season.

We love to give our pets a special gift at Christmas, but what is the most appropriate gift for a senior dog? From grooming tools to toys and games, we have some lovely Christmas gift ideas for older dogs.

Gifts to keep your dog comfortable and warm

If your dog’s bed has seen better days, invest in a cosy new bed with deep sides or in a doughnut shape to keep draughts at bay. Some dog beds have orthopaedic foam to help distribute an elderly dog’s weight, making it more comfortable and reducing pressure on sore joints.

You might also want to invest in a heated dog bed, or a dog-safe heated pad to pop into their bed to help keep them snug on colder nights. A warm dog coat can also help an older dog to feel more comfortable when going out in cooler weather.

Grooming tools

As dogs age, they can sometimes develop arthritis and mobility issues, which may result in them being less able to groom themselves.

Buy your pet some new grooming tools to keep their fur tangle-free and help to remove any loose hairs or mud.

Supplements for senior dogs

Just like humans, dogs can benefit from a little nutritional support as they get older to help them maintain supple joints, a glossy coat and healthy teeth.

Some health conditions can be better managed by offering extra vitamins and minerals in your dog’s diet, such as:

  • Vitamin A, which helps with eye and skin conditions
  • B vitamins, which help gastrointestinal problems
  • Antioxidant vitamin C, which supports the immune system
  • Vitamin D, which keeps bones strong
  • Iron, which can be helpful in cases of anaemia
  • Vitamin E and selenium, which can reduce inflammation

Look for brands that include these in a chew or tablet. Make sure any supplements accompany a good-quality dog food that includes a mix of nutrients suitable for senior dogs.

Food and treats for older dogs

As your dog ages, their nutritional needs change. As well as adding supplements, you’ll need to change your dog’s food to a suitable grain-free brand that offers all they need. This should include a good source of protein, plus vegetables and prebiotics for gut health. Dry foods can also be a good choice, with added protein, vitamins and minerals.

If purchasing treats as a gift for an older dog, choose those that won’t cause your dog to put on weight, and only give them the suggested daily allowance. Ensure you choose a brand that supports skin, fur and teeth.

Another great gift idea is to provide them with treats to keep their teeth healthy, such as dental sticks or a pizzle stick.

Elevated dog bowls

If your older dog is finding it harder to bend down for their food, a set of elevated bowls can help to alleviate any struggles. You could also invest in a non-slip mat to place underneath them, so your dog’s feet don’t slip while they’re eating.

Toys and games for senior dogs

Most dogs enjoy a new toy, no matter how old they are. A squeaky ball can help to increase their exercise, while a puzzle toy will keep their brain active. Other toys roll and flip, dispensing treats and providing entertainment to your dog as they do so.

A dog whistle is one of the best ways of recalling your pet, and this version is louder and can be heard from half a kilometre away – which may be ideal if your dog’s hearing isn’t as good as it once was.

Accessibility aids

If you allow your older dog onto furniture, you may have noticed them struggling to jump up or down from higher surfaces. Pet stairs, a ramp or an inexpensive step stool can help them to climb up safely when it’s time to snuggle on the sofa.

If your senior dog is finding walks difficult, you may think about investing in a dog stroller. There are several variations ranging from simple seats on wheels to dog carriers that transform into strollers – the latter is ideal if you take frequent drives with your dog.
